Christmas Gift Guide: The IRISH EDIT 2018.

The IRISH Edit of my Christmas Gift Guide highlights the very best in Irish Design, Irish businesses and creativity. My last version of this jam packed Gift Guide went down a storm, so I’m back with my 2018 edit! Many of the businesses included are small businesses, therefore supporting them not only helps sustain them but actually means a whole lot to the individuals behind each business who genuinely appreciate brand loyalty.

Here’s some of my personal highlights of what this tiny but mighty island nation has to offer...

*Not sponsored.

Bloss X Dundrum: A plethora of Irish Designers all under one roof housed in Dundrum Town Centre, makes this store a one stop shop for beautiful unique and sometimes limited edition Irish gifts. I was delighted as always to show my support for Irish businesses and this initiative, by attending the launch and discovering new Irish brands!

House of Leaf:

Behind the scarf: Introducing Lorna Esther Angel Finnegan.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Lorna at the launch of BLOSS X DUNDRUM pop up shop in November. We spoke about spirituality, supporting fellow women and Irish Design and about the creative force and inspiration behind her business House of L.E.A.F. I relish the opportunity to discover new Irish Designers and BLOSS X DUNDRUM is a treasure trove of Irish Designers all under one roof.

Lorna’s passion in life since she was a young girl was to create designs that uplift and inspire, that go far beyond the surface, that have depth, meaning and that connect emotionally with people. In 2016 Lorna’s vision began to come alive when she established L.E.A.F. A brand that produces Irish handmade luxury silk scarves. Art, quotes, stories and poems are entwined into each thread in order to produce a scarf that transcends into an experience for the wearer.

Grown.ie

As a proud product of Ireland, GROWN are deeply involved in changing ocean awareness in order to make people aware of the role the ocean plays in all our lives and the role our lives are playing in destroying it.

The message behind this brand is brilliant and recently thanks to the lovely Adrian Grenier (I say this as I’ve had the pleasure of a brief conversation with Adrian and he was indeed lovely, coming across as a warm and compassionate human) and his Lonely Whale initiative which he is Co-Founder of – I have become more aware of my plastic use and the effect our plastic use has on our oceans and planet. #saveourocean I have made more of a conscious effort to limit my plastic use opting to carry paper straws around in my handbag, use reusable cups more and the like. #stopsucking

Grown feature some gorgeous designs, simplistic yet impactful (pictured below is one of my personal favourites) in nature, much like their approach to ocean awareness and the important role the ocean plays in our lives.

Everything we make, every action we take and every system we have, goes through rigorous life cycle and sustainability auditing because we strongly believe that clothes shouldn’t cost the earth. That’s why we are committed to make it better.

Grown.ie is available at BLOSS X DUNDRUM pop up store or at Grown.ie

Jill and Gill:

A brand that landed on my radar last year is, sketch artist and printmaker duo Jill and Gill who excite with their contributions to the fashion world, a special nod to their collection of characteure sweatshirts featuring the likes of Anna Wintour (pictured) and Kate Moss!

Established in April 2016 while collaborating on a print commission together, the business grew organically with the approach that the work and brand is seen as collectible and engaging. Today they see themselves as a forward-thinking and multi-discipline studio but also a brand that is based on exclusivity and craftsmanship, with every edition, print, apparel or client piece of work created as a limited run.

More recently they have set up Jill & Gill Apparel, a collection of garments that represent aspirational women through illustration, print and style believing that being fashion conscious should be part of their brand’s ethos and story.

Available at pop up BLOSS X DUNDRUM STORE beside Five Guys or on their JillandGill.com

Manley:

It’s no secret that I am a massive fan and supporter of Manley, the designs, colours, textures, and quality are incredible with the attention to detail awe-inspiring from handmade leather flowers to stud work. The lady behind the brand, Emma Manley inspires me every day with her work ethic and to strive more towards investing in well made, quality key pieces – doing my part towards ethical fashion.

Check out a look at some of Manley AW18 lates pieces below available at BLOSS X DUNDRUM store located beside Five Guys as well as at www.manley.ie

Design detail on this Manley piece – handmade and hand sewn floral decorative addition to the back and pockets of this waistcoat not only elevates the piece but impresses a unique stamp upon it, the signature Manley stamp.

Ethical Silk Company:

For years I have been enjoying sleeping on silk. Growing up, my mother always slept with a silk scarf on her pillow and encouraged my sister and I to do the same as it was so good for our skin and hair. I quickly fell in love with this natural fabric and decided to explore the idea of making silk pillowcases and baby cot sheets, going on to expand into luxury loungewear and accessories.

According to the website, whilst looking for an alternative to traditional silk that has a shiny finish, The Ethical Silk Company found a particular mulberry silk production that extracts the silk from the cocoon after the moth has left the cocoon, resulting in a rich mulberry silk which is more like a fine linen with a matte lustre rather than the shiny finish of traditional silk, due to the particular way it is produced. It has a momme weight of 19.

Committed to always using ethical tailoring units, The Ethical Silk Company products are made in Fairtrade tailoring unit Mehera Shaw, located in Jaipur, India. By partnering with Fairtrade units, they, and their customers can have peace of mind in the production of products.

Mehera Shaw is a sustainable production unit based on a business philosophy that puts the human factor first. Its production unit in Jaipur follows Fairtrade standards in relation to employee and environmental practices. Mehera Shaw also supports a women’s group through its Foundation development project where the same ethical and labour standards are followed. Committing to social responsibility, The Ethical Silk Company has pledged to donate 10% profits to charity.

We want our customers to enjoy beautiful timeless pieces, with the knowledge they were made to the highest standards, both in quality and throughout the production process. Selling direct to our customers allows us keep our prices competitive whilst gaining valuable insight into what our customers want and appreciate.

Top Gift Idea: If you or a loved one are into sleep masks like me, why not treat yourself to one (pictured, from €25) from The Ethical Silk Company.

Irish Christmas Gift Guide, The Ethical Silk Company

7th Heaven.ie

{Pictured: The ivory embroidered scarf represents family, communication and creativity.}

I adore the back story to this Irish business having suffered a near death experience myself. Now, I would consider myself to be quite spiritual and reflective, I am big into crystal healing, affirmations, meditation, dabbling in reading Angel cards also for guidance, and I love the idea behind this business – wearing the colour of a particular Arch Angel for protection or guidance!

Award-winning Irish Milliner designer, Tahnee Morgan, began the start of a divine spiritual journey after having a near-death experience in 2009. This very personal, life-changing phenomenon inspired her to visit India for mindfulness retreats and to practice meditation in order to reconnect with her true inner self. Tahnee found herself being continually drawn to connect with the 7 Arch Angels and the powerful energy they represent.

Many books tell of the 7 Arch Angels great abilities as healers and guides, helping us in many of life’s challenging situations. Each Angel is represented by its own unique colour and message, those looking for guidance and protection would ask the Angel whose help they needed most to watch over them. Tahnee would wear the colour of a given Angel whenever she needed their protection and guidance, and it occurred to her that everybody could benefit from having an Angel on their shoulder and the idea of 7th Heaven was born.

For style inspiration and to discover more about the spiritually inspired back story of this brand visit their website and maybe you’ll be inspired to connect with your own thoughts and what you are drawn to connect with!

Jane Darcy:

I wanted to create something beautiful that would encourage not just me, but the people around me to treasure the simple moments in life. After a lot of thinking, and talking…I decided that candles and diffusers would be a perfect fit.

Amongst the many gems available at BLOSS X DUNDRUM is new discovery to me, Jane Darcy. With 100% natural offerings in the home fragrancing department Jane Darcy caught my eye at the launch of BLOSS and stayed with me. Now that’s Brand Awareness!

From sleek, eye catching and aesthetically pleasing packaging that will add to any, and all home décor, to the memorable scent offerings – this business is worth investigating especially if you or a loved one are a candle and diffuser fiend like moi!

There is something so interesting about the power of scents. Smell is one of the most sensitive of all our senses. Whether your aware of it or not, scents are affecting your mood and the decisions you make. This is super important to me as someone who suffers from anxiety. Stress is something that affects us all. It’s how we deal with the stress that counts.

Pictured: my favourite scent from the ‘Just Me’ collection.

Available at BLOSS X DUNDRUM and on the Jane Darcy website.

Fields Jewellers:

Not only are you giving or receiving the gift of wellness or the chance to travel, but you are creating an opportunity to create memories and giving the gift of time together – which in this day and age is often invaluable.

I’ve highlighted a couple of gift ideas that are gems for combining travel and wellness as well as catering to history/architecture lovers, adventure staycation travel options and the like.

Loco for Logos: Street-style with a Luxe Twist.

One of the most iconic fashion houses known for their monogram print and logo is Louis Vuitton.

This season Gucci, Fendi & Tommy Hilfiger are embracing the flashiness of logos and monogram print emblazoned on their collections and they are running with it. The flashiness of this look is a bold one but is a style revisited from the 90’s when this was the “done” thing amongst the “in” crowd. Believe me, I embraced it! Now it is more inclusive across the board with more designers giving a nod to streetstyle and sports luxe.

{Pictured: sporting Louis Vuitton with a nod to the logo trend – at the launch of Fitness Influencer Maeve Madden’s highly anticipated health related book.}

{GiGi Hadid sporting Fendi accents and futuristic #FendiResort18 shades in New York.}

Luxurious still, of course. Prestigious pieces? Yes – but with an edgier, androgynous twist when styled with a pared back outfit and military style boot for example. See Gigi Hadid’s look in Fendi (above) which lends to a laid back cool vibe to her overall outfit. This love of logos will continue to feature strongly going into the autumn/winter season.

The logo is back: wear it loud & proud!

{Pictured: (above) Chriselle Lim on the streets of Milan for #MFW in Fendi.}

{Vittoria Ceretti pictured, in a Fendi F/W18 sweatshirt before the show at Milan Fashion Week.}

Guests such as Vittoria Ceretti (pictured above) sported various logo threads to the Fendi F/W18 show at Milan Fashion Week in February, from laid back street-style to occasion wear.

{Pictured: (above) the new Fendi Peek-a-Boo X-Lite handbag makes its debut at MFW.}

{Singer – Sody is pictured in full Tommy Hilfiger logo double denim ensemblè.}

Will you be sporting the logo trend? I have to say I am loving it! Coupled with the resurgence of the chunky trainer such as the Fila Disruptor II, I think the luxury designers have embraced the street-style influence more than ever and made it their own. The result? Street-style personified with a luxurious flair and retro twist but for a modern age!

As always, thanks for stopping by.

How to Take Your Summer Staples into Autumn.

Our summer wardrobes are probably the hardest to update due to the precarious nature of our weather in Ireland. We’ve been embraced by a heatwave for the past six weeks or so allowing us to leave the umbrella at home, and instead branch out and embrace real summer style!

As we don’t usually get to indulge in typified summer style that requires balmy temperatures and an abundance of sunshine, if you choose wisely, the pieces you invest in will not only see you through to autumn but also arm you with timeless pieces for summer’s to come. Another bonus of this is that we can embrace sustainable fashion and do our bit for the environment when it comes to the fashion industry.

Whether you’re taking a city break, staycation or exploring far flung destinations I’ve waded through this summer’s top trends and picked out 6 of my faves that will take you seamlessly through to autumn.

Autumnal vibe: As with all the looks in this post I’ve styled them for summer and this outfit I’d actually leave as is for autumn. Another way I’d style this laid back chic vibe is pair the blazer with a collarless shirt, baker boy hat, ankle boots and switch up the scarf to a cosier one.

Autumnal vibe: when the autumnal chill hasn’t quite taken hold, pair with a long-line cardigan, ankle boots and a scarf for a smart-casual but laid back autumnal vibe that will compliment this outfit. A great outfit to throw on and look stylish without much thought, perfect for school runs, a day of shopping, errand running and airport attire.

Summer To Autumn Style Transition: The Headband and Basket Bag Trend.

Autumnal vibe: Early autumn temperatures tend to allow for a love of linen to be incorporated from summer into an autumnal wardrobe. The same goes for denim jackets. I’d switch up the outfit for autumn by adding a turban style hat, swop the sandals for slip on loafers a mini crossbody bucket bag or a back pack for a laid back but stylish, comfortable back to college/school outfit. For another style twist, pair the look with a biker – style (faux) leather jacket.

Autumnal vibe: Paired with a Trench or Duster style coat, you can easily elevate this outfit to a more autumnal “off duty” vibe. Add slip on loafers, a scarf, and a tote bag and you’re good to go for a day of running errands, brunch with the girls or a cosy, fireside lunch in a country inn.

Autumnal vibe: I’m loving the revival of 90’s style at the minute that being said, I adore platform trainers paired with a maxi skirt! It’s stylish, practical and comfy, perfect attire for running errands, festival fashion, a casual dinner date and exploring city destinations. Add a military style jacket, beret and stylish fashionable backpack for a modern take on a trend revival.

I hope you enjoyed my style inspiration tips for the coming season. As I’ve mentioned in the article, if you choose wisely, you won’t end up with a pile of clothes you don’t need or want to toss after one season.

Let me know which outfit is your fave and how you’d style them for autumn! Twitter: DublinGail Instagram: littlegforce Facebook: GlamForce Blog by Gail O’Connor.

Spring Style Lookbook: Wardrobe Classic The Trench.

Trends SS18 The Trench coat

Spotlight on: The Trench Coat for SS18
Trench Season:
Trench season I hear you ask?! You heard right! The resurfacing of the trench coat heralds in spring and with it trench season. This is how I refer to it anyway…

In this post, I’m shining a spot light on transitional style and classic wardrobe staple: the trench coat.

With the trench originally designed for the military it can be hard to find a design to suit one’s frame and shape.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a beautiful, sleek, classic style, trench in Marks and Spencer last year and opted for it in a mustard hue to inject a pop of colour into my capsule wardrobe. In the run up to Christmas I came across not one but two different trench style coats in Zara perfect for Spring 2018, both in a classic beige hue – one even has a look of a Burberry trench to it! Score.

*Not sponsored.

Trends SS18 The Trench coat

{Prada shades: from the stunning, recently opened Prada store at Kildare Village. Polo neck sweater via Penneys/Primark.}

SS18 TRENDS: The Trench Coat

Although it is considered a wardrobe staple and classic style investment year on year, the trench is every where this season! Show goers at London Fashion Week this year opted for the trench coat as their ultimate style accessory with the classic piece getting the street-style treatment on many levels from pairings with hoodies and jeans to culottes and a logo tee.

Au Naturale:

Natural colours and pastels bring a welcome change to our colour palette come this time of year. Tan, winter white, cream, beige, stone, blush pink, (I refuse to say “millennial pink – who even invented that term and for what?!) are all du jour, with this trend.

TRENDING: The Trench

A good trench: Pictured is a Zara faux suede trench style coat in a classic neutral beige hue. It has a refined aesthetic, with a good weight to it and hangs on the silhouette beautifully. With the addition of a cosy cape style scarf in a similiar neutral hue thrown around my shoulders this trench can be winter-proofed whilst remaining stylish.

Of course I can’t do a post on the trench coat without mentioning Burberry, a name widely associated with and renowned for their trench coat offerings from traditional silhouette to their seasonally updated versions.

Colour Block:

Of course, a good trench doesn’t have to embody the “classic” version we all know and love. Working in the fashion industry, I tend to dabble in trends and so opted for a dose of colour when it came to purchasing my first trench style coat and I’m so glad I did. The colour still works well with a lot of my wardrobe pieces and suits my skin tone.

It seems I made the right move in upping my trench game, as seen in offerings from Le Trench which has some seriously covetable options for true fashionistas.

Celebrity Endorsed: Le Trench coat

{L-R: Celebs Emmy Rossum, Anna Sophia Robb & Angie Harmon wearing Le Trench.}

Red is massive this season in every shade, with pillarbox or cardinal red being the standout shade and it’s going no where for spring. A bold and beautiful (albeit limited edition) red trench courtesy of Le Trench is the ideal “on-trend” piece and incorporates both the patent and colour blocking trends of late.

Another take on the trench from Le Trench is their print version. Dressed up or down a trench injects a casual yet sophisticated twist to any outfit with minimal effort! All that’s needed is a vibrant pop of colour on the lips, add some oversized shades and you’re good to go!

I hope you got some style inspiration from this post and manage to pick up a style of trench that you can’t wait to wear! As mentioned, there’s plenty of options out there from high street to high end so you’re bound to spot something that suits your personal style. Happy shopping!

Zermatt is a “green” ski destination meaning it’s environmental attributes are better than most. Essentially “car free“, they have opted for *electric run buses, mini cars to transport hotel guests, even the taxi’s run on electricity!* Morzine is a traditional, more commercial mountain town located in one of the world’s most extensive ski resorts Portes du Soleil, with chalet layout.  *A quieter ski destination in Switzerland is Rigi which boasts the oldest mountain railway in Europe dating back to 1871* with breath- takingly beautiful, dramatic mountain views – being a fan of railway travel naturally, this is an experience I would a relish. The idea of sleigh rides and hot choc apres ski adds to the allure of a ski holiday for me of course!

Other dream ski destinations are: ChamonixCourcheval and Meribel in France. Grindelwald in Switzerland and I have Dolomites in Italy on my list to explore in both summer and winter, as I have it on good authority that the location has an incredible reputation as a summer resort to boot!

How To: Style an Outfit for Ladies Day in Winter!

Winter-proof your Ladies Day Style!

The first major fashion day of the Irish racing calendar in 2018 takes place at Naas Racecourse this Sunday when the Winter Ladies Day is hosted at the Kildare track. Along with some top horse racing action, there will be plenty of competition off the track as the Hugh Statham Goldsmith & Jewellers-sponsored Winter Ladies Day will provide some exquisite prizes for those who are selected as the best dressed.

Speaking ahead of the Winters Ladies Day at Naas Racecourse, Hugh Statham said; “We are delighted to partner with Naas Racecourse once again to sponsor the Best Dressed Lady Competition. Jewellery is such a major part of every style, and with the right blend of jewellery to suit a dress it can turn an otherwise bland outfit into something more colourful and eye-catching. We like to think that our original pieces of jewellery provide that added touch of elegance to a person’s outfit that can really make them stand out.”

The prize for the winning lady will be a stunning Raymond Weil watch worth more than €2,250, while there are also bracelets worth €190 each for the four runners up in the fashion competition, bringing the total value of the prizes to over €3,000. All prizes have been kindly sponsored by Hugh Statham Goldsmith & Jewellers, who is a boutique independent retailer based in Naas. The well known jewellers sells one of a kind jewellery that is impossible to get anywhere else, ensuring originality as well as elegance for the customer.

A large crowd is expected for the first major meeting of the new year, and the Grade 1 Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle is the main race on the card.

Fashion judges on the day will be celebrity stylist Ingrid Hoey, and Anna Fortune, Commercial Manager at the Kildare Post.

{Ingrid Hoey looking uber glam and stylish at Naas Racecourse.}

Speaking in advance of Winter Ladies Day at Naas Racecourse, judge Ingrid Hoey said; “I’m really looking forward to seeing all the wonderful fashion that will be on show this year in Naas. In particular, I will be looking out for those who are able to combine comfort and warmth with style, considering the time of year. Naturally, it’s January so we don’t want to see skimpy summer dresses or bare legs. I will be looking for an unusual head piece, a well-cut coat and someone who has put a great look together in an effortless, elegant and very individual way.”

Winter’s Ladies Day: How to look stylish, cosy yet appropriate!

The two ladies gave some tips to those who are coming along to the races this Sunday, and with temperatures expected to be rather chilly, it is very much about wrapping up well to suit the weather.

Wear something appropriate:

Fashion does not have to hurt! (Amen to this…)

Dress for the weather, look stylish and warm at the same time. Racewear should be elegant, classy and chic. It is not the same type of outfit you might wear to a night club!  Anything too short or revealing will look out of place at the track.

Wear something on your head:

If you don’t want to wear a hat, think about a fascinator, head piece or elegant hair accessory such as a vintage clip.

Accessories:

Don’t forget your bag, shoes and jewellery will also be in show, make sure they coordinate with your outfit.

Colour:

Although it’s January it is nice to see a little pop of colour.  Think of a gorgeous shawl or scarf to lift your outfit.

Grooming:

Make up and nails are part of your overall look.  Watch out for your make up, this is a day time event, heavy make up looks odd in the cold light of day. Aim for a natural, warm, healthy complexion and go easy on the bronzer!

Flat Pack:

I’m going to throw in my own personal pro tip for events and suggest you pack stylish flat shoes to bring with you to slip on after judging has ceased!

There are seven races on the card with the first going to post at 12.40pm. Admission tickets cost €15 and include a €5 free bet. A range of hospitality packages are available and bookings can be made by contacting Naas Racecourse on (045) 897391 or by visiting www.naasracecourse.com

I hope this post gives you some tips and guidance on how to style Ladies Day Racewear attire in winter and give you some insight into what the judges are looking for!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Most Worn Fashion Trends: The Transitional Style EDIT.

Most Worn: The Round-up!

With sustainable fashion garnering more leverage by the day I thought I’d bring you a quick roundup of my most worn items over the last couple of months that will no doubt see me through into the autumn. I am a firm believer in recycling looks and key style pieces for many occasions and thought I’d show you how easy it is to do whilst keeping your looks fresh for the coming season.

{Pictured: Check out my City Chic Lookbook to see this outfit in action: Belle sleeves and denim jackets – transitional pieces taking you from summer to autumn…when you’re not quite ready to see summer leave!}

The Collar Necklace & Shades of White:

A collar style neck piece is a staple piece in my ‘jewellery wardrobe’. The addition of this type of neck piece instantly elevates any outfit effortlessly, injecting personality and statement effect – this **Maisey Necklace is an Irish Design piece via Manley (by Emma Manley) and is my favourite style of statment neckwear. It is well worth the investment as I get a ton of compliments each time I wear it. Lightweight and comfortable to wear it transforms jumpers and tops to v-neck style with flair, allowing me to insert my personal style to any outfit solidifying it’s ‘staple‘ title!

 TOP TIP: this collar style necklace is not just for evening wear! It can add panache to more everyday styles as you can see from the many ways I’ve styled it below.

{Pictured: Weekend chic: wearing the Manley “Maisey” Necklace paired with jeans a bomber jacket, a pop of leopard print and white leather-esque plimsoll shoes (more on those below!) – a perfect ensemble for brunch dates, date night, a spot of retail therapy or even ambling around country gardens.}

Shades of White: Cat-eye Shades & Leather Plimsolls.

Throughout this post you’ll find various examples of how I style TWO TRENDS IN ONE: like these incredibly sytlish white shades with a cat eye detail. These beauts are from Guess at TK Maxx. They are comfortable to wear and a super simple way to add glamour and style to any outfit!.

White shades have been a huge trend this season and the cat eye shape remains a key trend that is going nowhere.

{Pictured: wearing white leather-esque plimsoll shoes from River Island – uber comfy and stylish they’re ideal for rainy weather going into the AW17 season. TOP TIP: Swop out the cargo pants for a floaty printed midi-dress or pair with a leather mini skirt for some Autumn style inspo!  Check out the entire look in my City Chic Look-book!}

{Pictured: wearing the Manley “Maisey” Necklace at the exclusive VIP Fliquè Cosmetics Irish Launch with Charlotte Crosby formerly of MTV’s Geordie Shore.}

{Pictured: Coastal Living – see this outfit in action where I style ‘White Jeans 3 Ways‘ in the first installment of my Coastal Living Series.}

The Designer Bag Dupe of Dreams:

I adore finding dupes for designer pieces that are just way beyond my price range and **this dupe for the iconic Chanel Boy bag is an incredible find from on-line store Primp and Style (see pictured above and below.) The quality is stellar. Made in Italy, it has a good weighted body to it, comfortable to wear it has a durable leather outer shell and chain handle detailing that can be worn as pictured or doubled synonymous with the original Chanel piece. You can check it out in detail in my Coastal Living Series Lookbook – “White Jeans 3 Ways” which is linked above!

 Neon & Prints:

 If you find yourself shying away from a block colour of neon – adding a pop of colour to your outfit through accessories, is the way to go. From jewellery to shoes, you can easily incorporate neon into your wardrobe and it will see you through to autumn season when the Indian summer arrives: for example: this Zara bag would look chic paired with an all black outfit complete with leather jacket and boots come AW17!

TOP TIP: If neon isn’t your thing, dont fret as colour is everywhere this A/W17 season! Various shades of red feature highly with a spotlight on fire engine red type hues. I’m happy to report that I’ve seen various other shades including beautiful burgundy shades that will suit most skin types also feature from trend pieces to the new collections, so rejoice, there’s a red tone for everybody!

{Pictured: pairing neon and print at the Bow and Pearl Boutique Press Preview Breakfast event. The colours in this H&M cardi are stunning!}

Another fashion statement that you may find yourself shying away from is print. I must admit that I’m very particular with what print I wear (not venturing too far afield into crazy prints) with Paisley being a favourite. I fell in love with these cargo pants (below) from Penneys (Primark) and I was comfortable wearing them as a statement item for this outfit. If this type of style expression isn’t for you, try adding a printed bag, scarf, hat, even shoes to your outfit to add that statement print effect to an outfit and nail a trend.

TOP TIP: Print remains a strong trend going forward this AW17 season with embroidered pieces especially, featuring highly.

City Chic Styling Solutions: The Look-book.

wp-image--1906283732

Look-book Lowdown:

Leisurely park strolls and seeing the sights calls for comfort but that’s no reason to skimp on style!

I’ve pulled some looks featuring some of summers hottest trends and staple items that will take you straight through into Autumn for the latest edition of my ‘Styling Solutions‘ Series: City Chic.

The Basket Bag Trend:

My bag is vintage and is my take on the massive basket bag trend that is everywhere this summer. It has a chic Italian vibe to it and I’ve noticed this type of wooden handle feature is bang on trend going into Autumn/Winter 2017 gracing several bags that I’ve seen. One thing I adore and embrace about the fashion industry is when vintage style, is deemed on trend again! Rehashing styles instead of a focus on fast fashion is gathering momentum and is something Ive always embraced. Focus on attaining a collection of classic pieces that never truly go out of style and ‘shop your wardrobe’ to make the most out of your wardrobe pieces and get the most bang for your buck!

My white leather plimsolls with gold trim (pictured above) add a smart yet comfortable approach to footwear when exploring the cityscape.

Headwear:

I am an avid wearer of hats and this particular style and material is ideal for hot, summer styling or warding off crisp autumnal chill. Lightweight, and adding a chic flair to any outfit, this piece is from Marks and Spencer (last year’s collection). Keep an eye out for their S/S18 collection as they typically carry similar styles each summer season.

{Pictured wearing: Belle sleeved denim jacket from Penneys (Primark).}

Belle of the Ball:

Belle sleeves are also a massive trend that is going nowhere this Autumn/Winter season. This lightweight belle sleeved denim jacket features such feminine details as the belle sleeve coupled with a pretty bow detail on the arms. The sleeves can be hiked up to shorten sleeve length if desired and it is the perfect transitional piece to take me from cool summer nights into crisp autumnal weather before Old Man winter takes hold and the cashmere makes an appearance!

My top also continues the 70s style belle sleeve trend so whether I have my jacket on or off I’m rocking a belle sleeve!

I’m very particular when choosing a floral print to wear and I’m not usually one for larger prints but this one spoke to me plus the colours and print can be styled right into Autumn, perfect for a hint of the elusive Indian Summer weather!

Throwing Shade:

White shades – were a massive trend this summer and this continues into the coming season. This pair from Guess (via TK Maxx) embrace two trends; white frames coupled with the cat eye trend, and with no shortage of compliments on these shades it’s safe to say they’ll be gracing my face for another while yet!

Sightseeing Dublin with a Difference: The Lost Fashion History Tour.

Taking the opportunity to be a ‘Tourist in my City’ is one of my favourite ways to continuously explore the city I was born in, the city I call home, Dublin. There is an abundance of things to do here including some fantastic tours and I have been digging around looking for some speciality gems to bring to you!

The Tour:
The last weeknd of July saw me seize the opportunity to finally indulge in a gem of a tour that has long been on my “to do” list! The ‘Lost Fashion History Tour of Dublin’ run by Fashion Historian Ruth Griffin takes visitors through you guessed it, Dublin’s Lost Fashion History delving into and celebrating Dublin’s stylish past. Ruth sets about highlighting Dublin as a ‘Fashion Destination’ from the get-go, introducing attendees to the rich heritage and Irish fashion influence of the day from Georgian times through to present day.

{Pictured: in the National Gallery of Ireland – painting of Lady Lavery wearing a head scarf thus starting a fashion trend in Ireland.}

Fashion Moments on Merrion Square:

The tours typically take place on Saturday afternoons at various times throughout the year. They take in several areas of Dublin city uncovering their lost fashion signifigance. I opted for the Merrion Square tour. Our first fashion encounter on the tour was the National Gallery of Ireland. Here we learned of Lady Lavery’s influence on fashion trends in Georgian Dublin.

Who is Lady Lavery you ask?

The wife of renowned Irish portrait painter Sir John Lavery,  Lady Lavery saw her image grace the £50 note of the Irish Free State established in 1922 when her husband was commissioned to produce an image of the female personification of Ireland. Her image remaine on notes in ciirculation until the 1970’s and she remained as a watermark until 2002 when the Euro currency became legal tender in Ireland.

A stop at Dublin treasure Swenys Pharmacy is included on the tour. Featured in James Joyce’s Ulysess and described in great detail, (a description that stands to this day) this historical hub is now run by volunteers who preserve the shop as it was in Joyce’s time. Expect second hand books and daily readings of Joyce’s works. You can also pick up some lemony soap which made the shop famous, all proceeds from items sold go towards the preservation of this literary landmark.  Here we enjoyed a back story to the store and a tune courtesy of PJ (left of picture below in white pharmacist coat) that was popular in Joycean times. This stop proved a popular spot on the tour!

{Pictured: Ruth reading an excerpt from James Joyces famed book Ulysses. The excerpt focused on Joyce’s detailed description of ladies fashion at the time Edwardian in style.}

{Pictured: PJ of Sweny’s Pharmacy Dublin giving us a rendition of a Joycean tune which was sung at the time of James Joyce.}

{Pictured: infamous Leopold Blooms ‘Lemony soap‘ still sold in Sweny’s to this day.}

{Pictured: Statue of Oscar Wilde, overlooking his former home in Dublin.}

{Pictured: Ruth regaled us with tales of Jackie Kennedy embracing and indeed wearing, Irish Fashion  – on the doorsteps of the former home of renowned Irish Fashion designer Sybil Connolly.}

{Pictured: Renowned Irish designer Sybil Connolly sporting a green felt ‘leprechaun’ hat (now seen as offensive terminology) upon her arrival in New York just days before St. Patrick’s Day – nevertheless her wearing of this style of hat started a fashion trend in the U.S.}

{Pictured: a Sybil Connolly dress – 1950’s Dublin.  FUN FACT: Jackie Kennedy wore a Sybil Connolly piece for her White House portrait.}

{Pictured: ‘The Three Lives of Irish Linen’ by Sybil Connolly.}

Giving it Welly:

We rounded off the tour with exclusive access to the Duke of Wellingtons House, located in the stunning 5* Merrion Hotel, Dublin. The Merrion Hotel consists of 4 townhouses combined to house hotel accommodation, one of these town houses formerly home to the Duke.

{Pictured: Bust of the Duke of Wellington located in the Merrion Hotel, Dublin.}

The Duke of Wellington, a military man tired of tasselled military boots, redesigned the boots in leather and streamlined the look of them with a tighter cut to the calf. Later this streamlined version became the rubberised version we are familiar with today.

{Pictured: Delicious Fish & chip supper done ‘The 5* Merrion way’. Good sized portions, reasonably priced for a 5* location.}

The tour wrapped up in the majestic 5* Merrion Hotel where most of the group said their goodbyes and disbanded. A few of us remained and enjoyed after tour drinks (not included in tour price) with Ruth and relived the tour whilst having the craic!

The tour gets a big two thumbs up from me, I cannot recommend it enough. Packed full of historical knowledge and fashionable facts, the tour takes about 2 hours to complete and is a lovely way to while away an afternoon in Dublin. I thoroughly enjoyed it as did my Mom who accompanied me and we’re already looking forward to the next one! With tours priced at just €15 p/p visitors and locals alike will no doubt enjoy! You can visit Ruth’s website for more information and if you book a tour remember to tell Ruth I sent ya!

Until next time…

Fashion News: Boutique In Dublin – ‘Bow & Pearl’ Relocation & SS17 Collection!

The Bow & Pearl Boutique ‘Swan’ song as it Relocates:

Last week saw me starting out particularly early in the morning, awakening to slivers of light pouring in through my curtains – donning some summery neon and print, I made my way to one of my favourite villages just outside of Dublin City, all in the name of fashion!

The Event: Media Breakfast with fashion boutique Bow and Pearl.

The NEW Location: Bow & Pearl Boutique, Swan Centre, Rathmines, Co.Dublin.

The Date: 14th June 2017.

The event was an invitation to peruse the newly relocated store to the revamped Swan Centre in Rathmines. Attendees also got to peruse the S/S17 collection and nibble on delicious breakfast pastries from the Natural Bakery Company and iced sweet peach tea, (which gave me all the ‘southern belle’ vibes, each time I accepted said tea, I resisted the urge to say “why thank you darlin” in mock southern drawl!) a welcome delight on an unusually hot summer’s morning in Ireland!

New Lease of Life:

The new store opened 2 weeks ago to roaring success on opening weekend and is sure to surge ahead building upon the stores relationship with its loyal customer base. The new store is a short walk/drive from the previous location giving new and existing customers something to be excited about.

Packed to the brim with high end yet affordable designer goodies, Owner of Bow & Pearl Bronagh O’Sullivan, felt it was time the store evolved saying:

We’ve loved our time in Ranelagh, but the opportunity in Rathmines felt like the perfect evolution for the brand.

Bronagh worked with Creative Director and Retail Expert Lara Curry on the aesthetic of the store to deliver on the ‘shopping experience‘ for the customer, resulting in a slice of retail heaven.

The interiors of the new store are exceedingly beautiful and welcoming with a clean, fresh, modern feel and look. The overall aesthetic is eye-wateringly pleasing, without doubt, you will love the new space after all it has been designed with the customer shopping experience in mind!

I feel comfortable browsing the store, it’s open plan feel is spacious, bright and airy allowing one to peruse with ease.

The store encapsulates various summer styles from coastal leisure, resortstyle wear (my fave) much like that worn in The Hamptons or on board a towering schooner, to separates and accessories that will elevate the average summer outfit for work and play.

TOP PICKS for Summer:

I’ve selected some pieces that made my wishlist, and are therefore my top picks for summer from the Bow and Pearl SS17 collection. These pieces will be perfect for my upcoming trip to Abu Dhabi & Dubai later in the year. Eeek!

Accessories:

From an EPIC wall of crisp white trainers and the bluest jeans to the various accessories and shades to style them with, this store has an abundance of character and accessories to match.

Location! Location! Location!

With the Luas a 10 minute walk (max) from The Swan Centre in Rathmines, to the Ranelagh stop and bus services aplenty into town (Dublin) – this new location is a winner.

 Check out the Bow and Pearl website for directions and to peruse the SS17 collection.

Area Foodie Tip: Coffee lovers take note – combine your shopping experience in Rathmines (taking in Bow and Pearl of course), get your coffee fix in Two Fifty Square Coffee serving up some of the best coffee around in Williams Park, Rathmines. Their blends are simply delicious, definitely worth the trip. Thanks to Stylist extraordinaire Irene OBrien for introducing me to this place on our impromtu coffee date!
